Why choose PNG over JPG?

Because PNG throws nothing away. Around sharp edges - text, diagrams, line art, screenshots - JPEG compression leaves a faint grey halo that PNG does not. PNG can also store transparency, which JPG cannot represent at all. The trade is file size: a PNG of a photographic page can be several times larger.

Does PNG keep a transparent background?

Yes. Where a PDF page has nothing drawn, the PNG stays transparent rather than being filled with white. That is the main practical reason to choose it over JPG for logos, stamps and cut-out artwork.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Every page is rendered in your browser by its own graphics engine, and there is no backend to send anything to. The page is served with a Content Security Policy containing connect-src self, which makes it structurally incapable of opening a connection to another origin.

What resolution should I use?

Match it to where the image is going. 96 dpi for a screen, 150 for a document or a slide, 300 for printing. Higher is not automatically better - a 300 dpi PNG of a full page is a very large file, and on a screen it looks identical to 150.

Why did I get a ZIP file?

Because browsers deliberately stop a website from saving many files in a row. A ZIP is one download containing all the images. Convert a single page and you get that image directly instead.

When the edges have to stay sharp

PNG stores exactly the pixels it was given, which matters most for the things JPEG handles worst: text, diagrams, line drawings and screenshots. JPEG compresses by discarding detail it judges unimportant, and around a hard black-on-white edge that judgement shows up as a grey halo. PNG has none of that, and it is the only one of the two that can keep a transparent background rather than flattening it onto white.

Transparency is preserved. A page with a see-through background stays see-through, instead of being placed on white as JPG requires.
Nothing is discarded. A PNG of a page is pixel-for-pixel what was drawn, which is why the files are larger than the JPG equivalent.
